Let's Talk Men's Health & Wellbeing

International Men's Health Week takes place from Monday, 9 June to Sunday, 15 June 2025.
According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW), Australian males experience more of their total disease burden from dying prematurely than from living with disease and injury. About 40% of ill health and premature death among males could have been potentially prevented by avoiding or reducing exposure to certain risk factors. The leading risk factors contributing to the most ill health and premature death among males are tobacco, obesity, all dietary risks, and alcohol and drug use.
Men are also less likely to seek health care services often leading to undiagnosed conditions and preventable diseases. This culture of silence and stoicism around men's health is deeply ingrained. Health illiteracy, paired with the pressure to “tough it out” continues to impact men of all ages.
Data suggests a 50% decline in fitness memberships for men aged 45–59. While sedentary behaviour can fast track ill health, too much of a good thing can adversely affect individuals. Men aged 19–34 have the highest fitness participation rates. The caveat here is that men aged 15–20 have the highest fitness-related injury rates with many injuries remaining undiagnosed perpetuated by this multi-generational dilemma of male health avoidance.
This is where advocacy and accessible health education come into play. No field is better positioned to lead this movement than allied health. At Right at Home Allied Health, we believe in empowering men to take charge of their health journey. That’s why we offer free 20-minute Discovery Sessions for incoming clients where one of our allied health clinicians meets with you to discover, heal, and optimise your physical and emotional wellbeing.
How you can challenge unhealthy masculinity norms?
– Express yourself openly
– Don't dismiss emotions as weak
– Encourage the men in your life to talk about mental health
– Openly and actively reject masculine phrases like “you need to man up” or “boys don't cry”
If you would like to learn more about Men's Health Week, the Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF) has a plethora of resources.
– Know Your Man Facts toolkits cover important men’s health issues
– Men’s Health Chats program invites people to chat about men’s health in their workplaces, communities, and social groups and for men to sign up for a series of online lunchtime chats
