At Right at Home Allied Health we use a number of complimentary therapies to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. Both our physiotherapists and chiropractors harness dry needling to enhance client experience and recovery.

Dry needling involves inserting thin, solid needles into specific trigger points in the muscle to alleviate tension and improve function. While dry needling is similar to acupuncture, it focuses on the western medical understanding of anatomy and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Dry Needling Explained

Trigger point release – Dry needling directly addresses myofascial trigger points by inserting needles into these sensitive areas. This helps to release the muscle tension and tightness associated with the trigger point.

Local twitch response – A local twitch response is an involuntary muscle spasm that can occur when the needle is inserted into a trigger point. This twitch is believed to be a sign that the muscle is reacting to the needle and can help to break up the taut band of muscle fibers.

Increased blood flow – Dry needling can improve blood flow to the affected area, bringing oxygen and nutrients to muscle tissue. This increased circulation can help to accelerate the healing process and reduce inflammation.

Pain modulation – Dry needling can stimulate the release of endorphins (our happy chemicals). This can help to reduce perception of pain and promote overall wellbeing.

Dry needling can help with:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Muscle spasms and tightness
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Sports and overuse injuries
  • Post-surgery stiffness
  • Conditions like sciatica, tennis elbow, and TMJ disorder

Dry needling may only be performed by qualified allied health practitioners who have completed specific training and hold appropriate registration and insurance.
